ReInventing Ourselves

by Phil

There's a strange and wonderful phenomenon peculiar to the human condition known as personal redemption. We've all seen examples of children coming from abusive and dysfunctional homes, only to become ideal parents. We've seen career criminals turning their lives around and becoming positive role models, making a real difference in their communities. We've even seen stories of folks who came from abject poverty to become very successful in legitimate businesses.

The common link to each and every story of personal redemption involves an epiphany moment, a here-and-now experience when a person "all-of-a-sudden woke up" to their true potentials. It can be a split-second Eureka! moment or be the end-result of a slow-motion process of deep introspection, either path can end in with the same result. It's important to know that personal redemption can come in many forms, no matter where we live, no matter what culture we're from, and no matter what our circumstances might have been. Even if a person claims to have converted to a particular religion, the outcome is essentially the same - something about their lives has fundamentally changed forever.

Another way to admire and respect personal redemption is to know that we all have the innate ability to reinvent ourselves - it's the birthright of our free-will - and absolutely nothing can separate us from this essential birthright unless we foolishly give it away. The Creative Class of artists and musicians have been reinventing themselves since the beginning of time and still do to this day, abandoning one form of expression to embrace another. Every true artist faces a blank canvass and may feel the urge to do something completely different, somehow strangely and wonderfully based on a drive from a higher calling to take their craft to the next level.

Taking anything to the next level is the basic presumption behind the laws of evolution. We either fully acknowledge and embrace the fundamental nature of change or some part of us dies. Change happens whether we like it or not, in the same regularity as it has done for every individual in every species since the Big Bang. The key to success always lies in how well we adapt to the inevitability of changing times, such as our current economic situation.

It's not too much of a stretch to know that we're all essentially artists, staring at the blank canvasses of our lives each and every day. In any here-and-now moment, we can reinvent ourselves to successfully maneuver whatever changes come along. This might be as simple as rewriting our resumès, leaving out our Harvard Ph.D. in astrophysics to land that burger-flipping job until the economy improves. Having a career change forced upon us can remind us of the truism "Necessity is the Mother of Invention."

Previous Saturn/Uranus oppositions, like the ones we're currently going through, have been mini-eras of tremendous technological innovations. In many ways, the Universe is compelling us to reinvent ourselves, so now would be an ideal time for personal redemption. Going with that flow could easily lead to prosperity, maybe not on financial levels but on the soul level - the really important stuff.
