Ant Henny Penny's Huggin'

Ant Henny-Penny (you remember - we called her that cause her birth name was Henrietta Penelope) may not be a good housekeeper but nobody can ever say she's HOUSE-PROUD! And she shore is kind to everybody and everything - peeple, critters, even creepy-crawlies - and they jest love her house - it's alwez smorgasbord time there. But even Ant Henny-Penny can abide flies crawlin over stuff to eat. One thing, she makes shore all the screens are in good workin order so's not too menny bugs can git in to start off with. Another thing she duz - she jest cant get around to doin up the dishes right after supper or put leftovers away.

Except she knows to put away the milk and butter and things that's like to turn bad - she reads a lot and she red that somewheres or other. Anyways, to take care of a half ate pie or some pork chops left over, she made the prettiest danged little covers to put over all them dishes. Ant Henny-Penny is shore smart with a needle, I'll give her that! yesterday, and he only comes in every three or four days, thiThem covers has got little ruffles and bows, here and there. So Ant Henny-Penny can jest put her feet up and relish that second cup of coffee, 'thout worrying her head about them flies gitten on things till she gits round to doin up them there dishes. She sometimes dont git round to it till next day.

Me and the other young'ns sure thought Ant Henny-Penny was pure D smart. Ant Henny-Penny was alwez goin on about bein effishunt. Like she'd say, "It jest isn't effishunt to wash up dishes after every meal." Ant Henny-Penny talks right funny but that was on account of her bein brought up in Yankeeland up north somewheres and her readin a lot to boot. But Ma would jest pull her mouth in as little as she could git it and put her nose way up and say , "Huh! Jest plain lazy, that's what SHE is." Ant Henny-Penny werent no real BLOOD relation, Ma alwez said. Course she was Ma's third cousin, twice removed, but Ma said that dint count.

Anyways, she married Pa's brother. "Poor man." Ma alwez said bout Uncel Egg, but somehow Uncel Egg (his birth name was Robert Egbert)alwez looked happy - and that's a heap moren you could say about Pa sometimes. And Ant Henny-Penny weren't alwez gittin on him to do things like Ma was alwez doin Pa and us young'ns. So Uncel Egg did a lot of laughin and cutting the fool. Ant Henny-Penny was a great one for laughin to. And huggin. Land, we got more huggin there in a afternoon then we did at home in a month. Ma was alwez too busy, scrubbin and pollishin and scrubbin us too, so's we wouldn be shamin her none. I guess maybe my filosofy is that kids need to be scrubbed but huggin shore is more fun.
